Politician
Nelson Mandela started participating in politics in his thirties, when he led the Defiance campaign in 1952 and the 1955 congress of the people. This campaign soon hit a brick wall when he was charged with high treason against the Government, along with 155 other activists.
New laws were being passed which told black people where to live and work. Furiously Mandela tried to fight back, his plan was to create campaigns against military and government targets. He claimed to hope and rebuild the country based on democracy, freedom and most Importantly equality. Mandela said a the time:"It is an ideal which I hope to live for and achieve", this showed how committed Mandela was for equality.
After being on the run for 17 months Nelson Mandela was finally arrested. He was sentenced to life in prison on Robben Island which was in South Africa, he was also charged with sabotage for attempting to violently overthrow the government. At this time young South Africans continued to rebel the Government while Mandela and other leaders of the (ANC) African National Congress were still in jail. Finally in 1990 the changes started taking place
Nelson Mandela was released after being imprisoned for 27 years and then the ban against the ANC was lifted. Three years later Nelson Mandela was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his determination and hard work to end the apartheid Government. Months after this event Nelson Mandela was elected as President. In 1999 Mandela stepped down as President and was mostly known for his hard and dedicated work to end global poverty and helping to resolve conflicts and wars throughout Africa.
